Research And Analysis Magazine Ads

This is a double page spread found in a magazine. A double page spread could be telling a story, spreading gossip or simply be an advert. A double page spread is spread across two pages hense them being 'double paged'. The layout of the example on the left is simular to how I am planning on setting out my double pae spread for my coursework. I will use the left page for the images as we read from left to right so I want to invite my audience into reading my advert. I want to attract them in also with a big title spreading across both pages. The title on the example given here is spead diagonally from left to right and I think this works really well as it is inviting me into reading more. I will then have my text on the right handside. I will use medium sized font as I want to invite the audience also with my text aswell as my images. The font size on this example is to small and it is difficult to read. Although this can be useful as it draws you in closer to the advert to see what has been written. Another option I have is to use one whole large image as the background across the both pages. I think this is another effective way of laying out double paged spreads because it links to two pages together neatly and nicely. The colour scheme of my advert is going to be bright and colour as I am trying to attract the audience into reading it. The audience I am basing my advert and website on is the teenage population. I am going for a genre of music and sport with an Urban theme so I will link my images with this theme. I will also try and keep the font and colours within the theme possibly using some editing of letting in photo editor. Looking at other examples on the internet and in my own magazines the basic layout seems to stand out more to me than any complicated layout because the complicated ones have to much going on and i don't seem to be drawn into the text and what it is trying to describe or sell. The example above does have one feature i will be using on my double page spread and that is the text box doing vertically down the right hand page. This is where i will be putting my TV schedule for my channel.

There are a number of adverts we see inside magazines, perfume adverts, supermarket adverts, tv channel adverts, film adverts, holiday adverts, bank adverts and many more.

The advert on the left is an advert advertising a women s perfume. I think this advert is perfect for this because it is modelling a pretty female with a bottle of the latest perfume. The women is represented as a kind of hollywood Marilyn Monroe type figure. The women comes across to me as very sexy as she is gazing just off camera showing a Monroe type vulnerability and femininity.
The perfume bottle is in the corner of the screen. This is very typical of a womens advert and the advert is persuasive because it makes women want to buy the perfume. Female audience looking at this will want to look exactly like this women in the advert. The sepia colours in this advert to me look very nostalgic because it is reminiscent of old hollywood photos.
The use of a backlight on the women creates a glowing quality on her and makes her stand out very clearly in the photo and look very bright because it was lit up her blonde curly hair. This picture is clearly edited because the women s skin is completely clear and also the lighting has a great effect on the image.
One thing I think they should change about this ad is the writing. The writing is the colour white and is very thin font. To me this does not stand out very clearly and it is quite difficult to read. This can also have its positives because it makes the audience reading the mag look closer at the advert to find out relevant information. On this picture, the name of the company Dolce & Gabbana is larger than the actual name of the product being advertise because they want to get their name out on the market and get recognised as one of the most popular perfume sellers you can get.
The layout of the advert in my opinion is very good because you can clearly see what the advert is advertising and which audience it is a aimed at. Also the use of a large image of a women draws attention to the people reading the magazine. They want to find out more about the advert as they read it.

This adverts is advertising a Sony Ericsson mobile phone. This advert found in FHM Magazine is obviously aimed at men, and it will instantly attract a male audience in because of the women holding the phone is dressed very sexually and entices the audience in.
The first thing that most people look at when they see a person is mainly look at the eyes, here you cannot see the females eyes so you look at the phone due to the size of it on the page.
The colours on this advert to me seem very metal like and mechanical. The dark blue background seems almost grey which i would associate with metal and being mechanical as it is a mechanical product being sold. Also the phone would sink into the background but it doesn't due to the females arm. The female has almost being brightened up to make the product stand out better in the picture. The bra that the female is wearing also fits in with the mechanical colour scheme, silvers and greys are used to fit the scheme and this again stands out clearly due to the females skin being brighter than the rest of the image.

The layout of this advert in my opinion is layed out very well because it attracts the audience in with the picture rather than putting the audience of with the long paragraph of information. The audience are attracted by the females body and then think to read on about the advert to find out more. Also the use of the title 'Picture Perfect' across the body of the model attracts you in because it really is the perfect picture. The title also tells us about the phone it is advertising. It is stating that the phone has a good camera giving you the perfect picture. The fact that the writing is in small font and in white print makes the audience read into the advert in more detail which is what the seller is trying to do.

Research and Analysis Newspaper Ad

Tv channels try and advertise their channel and programmes as much as possible. Ways in which companies do this is are billboards, tv advertising, magazines and newspapers. The main way that they do this is by publishing their adverts in magazines and newspapers.

This is a screen shot of the suns online website, you can view the newspaper without actually buying a newspaper just from looking on the world wide web. The layout of this is the same as an newspaper, the main title of the page is at the top of the page and then the main story is in the centre. The main image is the centre picture showing todays headline, here it is from the xfactor. Obviously here on a website you can click to view other pages rather than flicking through like an ordinary newspaper.
Technology these days are so high tech it is taking over the whole concept of reading a book.

This is a photo I have taken of a whole page from the Sun newspaper of a load of adverts. The newspaper even has full page spreads of adverts in their newspaper purely for the money. A newspaper can charge up to £250 for a quarter page advertisement in their newspaper and companies are willing to pay because they want their names out on the market. You can see from the page that they are all advertising something whether it is a deal, pure advertisement to the company or selling a product. The Sun has also used different types of font and sized letting to sell their advertisement. The different in sizes are down to how much the company wanting to advertise are willing to pay, how ever much they offer the Sun, the sun will return in the size of the advertisement.
If you look at the picture on the left the main advert you see is the Great Choice advert for the phone network company 3. The advert doesn't have much colour as it is printed in black and white but the bold letting of the title Great Choice stands out the the person reading the paper. Also the prices are in bubbles with the phones next to them so it is clear how much the phones are. It gives its point across to the audience which is what an advert is meant to do. Also above this advert is another advert for the same company but it is even larger than the other. The title reads Big Deal in larger typography because they are providing so Big Deals within the company, the letting is very bold and large which means it stands out on the page. In the far right corner is a circle and within the circle reads a  price of £18. This is what the company is trying to get across to the audience. To make this advert better I think the company 3 should ad a little bit of colour to make the advert stand out more. People are attracted to colour rather than just plain black and white. They have also used convergence in their advert as they have got on their advert a telephone number and also an email address. All across the bottom of the page are smaller adverts, this is due to the fact that they have given less money so the printers. In a way having a smaller advert can be a good thing because the reader then has to look closer and in more detail at the advert but I believe bigger is better as people go to what strikes them first. The layout of this page in my opinion looks very cluttered and the adverts are all to close together and it doesn't really attract me in.

Here are two different sized adverts from two major companies in the supermarket industry. Tesco and Morrisions are huge in the supermarket shopping industry yet they still advertise in many newspapers. Sometimes on the bottom of their ads they may give out half price vouchers or some sort of voucher or prize to draw you into shopping at their market. The advert on the left is for Morrisons. The Morrisons advert attracts me more because of the size of their picture and the colours are very bright. The picture is of creates on alcohol that they are selling cheap in the store. Also the use of the red Pay Less writing in the top left corner attracts me in because people are looking for the best deals at their local supermarkets. One problem I see in this advert is that they have only printed their logo down the bottom of the page in very small print. The logo is not very noticeable so they are putting on a good deal but no one knows who is advertising. The advert on the right is for Tesco. The first thing you see is their slogan, 'Every little helps'. This is a good way of attracting the audience in because it is a slogan that everyone can recognise and relate to with tesco. Also tesco have their own colour scheme of blue and red which they have clearly used in they advert in this newspaper as the writing is in blue and red. Also they have used more blue and red down the bottom of the page for boxes that outline more writing. The long box at the bottom is red with white writing so that the writing clearly stands out and it is also sticking with their colour scheme. The writing in the box says Double Club-card Points Too. This is saying if you take this offer up from this advert you will get double club-card points next time you shop. I found these adverts in the Daily Mail which is based more at the adult audience. This is why I found these adverts in this paper because it is based at the adult audience and most adults have children and will be looking for deals at the local supermarket for food etc.

Here is the Tesco logo in the Sun newspaper. They advertise this logo as much as they can and here it is on a the bottom right hand corner of a half page spread. The main thing I see when i look at this logo is that it is separate to the rest of the advert. It stands out on its own and it also sticks to the colour scheme of the ads.

Research And Analysis Websites

I have been looking into some websites of tv channels that interest me and i have print screened to show evidence of my research into different layouts and designs.

Channel E4: www.e4.com

This is a website for the channel E4. This channel mainly shows teenage drama series and are based for the teenage audience. For example 'The Inbetweeners'. The website also has available links for you to click on the programmes to view the series. This website to me I think is very suitable for a teenage audience because it is attractive and gives you what you want. I really like this homepage because of the background, the background is an image which they also use for the advertisment on their tv channel. The background is very stylish and well presentated. The colour scheme for E4 is purple and white which they use also in their logo branding. These two colours work well together because the white is a neutral colour like a normal page and the purple is very bold. They have clearly advertised their logo of a number 4 on their website because they want people to reconise the logo.

They have cleverly inserted it onto the background image of what looks to be an empty warehouse. They have used different types of font, small, medium and large style fonts also using bold lettering for the key words such as page headings. This is something I will take into consideration when building my website. The layout of this website is clear and simple which means it is easy to navigate.

Also they have added a search bar at the top of the page so if you cannot find what you are looking you simply type it in the search bar. I will properly add this in when i make my website because it a really handy tool to have and a easy way of navigating.

One of the pages you can click on on this site also is called Do it & win. You can click on games to win prizes so this can sometimes involve the designer adding in 'FLASH'. The games can link up to another website so that you can play the game. I may add a competition page onto my website but the links may not be real due to the fact I am only using one channel and most competition links send you to another page. For example poker pages.

This a slideshow of many of the shows shown on the channel E4. You can click on this to view the shows on the website. I will not be able to use this on my website because I will only be using one channel but I do think this is really good for the audience it is aimed at which is mainly the teenage audience.

BBC: www.bbc.co.uk

This is the website for the BBC. I took a picture of this website because there are many different links a number of different pages to view. The picture on the left <- shows a clear view of all the news at present. They are all under separate titles such as Sport, Weather etc so that the audience can simply click on the heading to view the news and updates in that section. This website is aimed more for a adult audience so simple colours are used and everything is a lot bolder. Over all I think the website is a lot more complex technically due to the amount of hyperlinks and links to different pages but it is a lot easier to navigate thanks to the headings above each section. I don't really like the layout of this website because there looks to be to much going on and it looks cluttered, I prefer the headings of the pages to be at the top of the page so that it is easier to navigate and you will have more spage on the page to put things like images or videos. This website is one of the largest I know. There are links to hundreds of different pages because the news covers the whole of Britian. This page is one of the quickest updates sites also, they update it was soon as something happens in the world for example breakin news. This website also uses other major websites for their audiences attention such as Youtube. There are videos on the page that link up to the youtube site.

This is one of the pages you can click on, on the homepage of the BBC website. This link sends you to the sports page showing you the latest updates of sport. This is a good thing to pt on a website but I will properly not be able to do this because i will not be updating my website all the time. If I was to go into making websites in the future I would possibly look into doing latest updates.

MTV: www.mtv.co.uk

This is the website for MTV msic channel. This is the page under music. The genre for this website looks to me to be aimed at a teenage audience with the bright colours to attract you in. I took this screen shot because I am interested in music and here you can click on a multilink to download the current top 40. Many of the past pupils used this idea so I may take this into consideration for my website coursework. There is also a number of images used on this page because it makes the page more attractive to look at. If a teenage music site was simply lots of text the audience would not want to read it so they use photos of celebrities and people we can relate to, to attract us in.

This is how most pages set out their websites. They tend to have the titles and headings of pages at the top so it is the first thing you see. Some of the links on this page are Channel, Music, News, Shows, Video, Movies. This is one thing I know for definite I will be doing on my website because I think it is the easiest way for the audience to navigate the website.

This is one page that I will be adding to my website when I make it for coursework. I will not be allowed to use any images for the internet so I will take my own photos and upload them to the website. To allow people to view this page I will have a heading on my navigation bar as Gallery or Photos. I will set mine out similar to this example from the MTV website. I think the layout of the page is very attractive and suitable for the audience it is aimed at. The website has used many different pictures of celebrities and they have used different sizes for different stories. I will take this into consideration when making my page. I will use larger pictures for more important or up to date events. I will also use similar photos to this website but using my own. I will post pictures of events that have recently taken place so that the audience can see how the event went.

This is one way that I could possibly set out my images for my gallery page. It is very neatly laid out and easy to click on the page. Another thing I have noticed is the thumbnails for all of these pictures attracted you in because of what they are showing. I will try and get the same effect with my pictures and hopefully they will attract the audience in.

How This Went

This did not go to plan whatsoever. Due to the amount of work in other subjects and also examinations in other subjects I really struggled to stick to my time plan. I completely under estimated the amount of work that was needed to create my ancillary tasks and mostly my website.
Another issue that completely through my time management off course was the loss of my teacher Mrs Roberts. My first media teacher who started the course with my class left after the christmas period which then left my class to work alone with no teacher help or input. Any issues we had for example with embedding my video to my website we then had to deal with ourselves.

However in reflection I should have incorporated contingency time to make me more prepared for any changes to my set plan. I should have also allowed a longer time period for each task. One month set on the whole of researching and planning rather than just a matter of days. Also for the construction of my website I only allowed myself a month to do so, as well as trying to complete my blog, double page spread and newspaper advert. This in my opinion was very optimistic as I discovered the process to create a level 3-4 website took a lot longer than just one month. Then again, even by going over the deadlines I set for myself for my work I still ended up rushing rather a lot  of things. Writing my evaluation was very stressful as the deadline for the whole course was approaching fast and I still handout written a good evaluation. Due to the amount of time I took creating my website, my newspaper adverts and double page spread were not up to the standard I was hoping but I do think I did a very good job considering my lack of PSE experience.

Research And Planning Beginning

Today I started year 13 and I had a look at the course that I am going to be taking this year. Last year for course work i had to do film and this year it is websites. I have had a look at some of the websites from past pupils in my school to gather some ideas for when I make my website.

Looking and comparing the boys websites to the girls websites the girls have chosen to go for a lot more colour and vibrancy in the design where as the boys have gone for a lot more simpler and serious websites. All the pupils went along the lines for a music websites for a teenage audience. Some of the multilinks they had were leading to the top 40 charts and photos of "celebs and events". I think I am going to keep up with this trend because this is also what i am interested in.

Here are a few screen shots of past pupils websites
