Audience Research
On friday the 8th December the sixth form media students including myself had a private lesson from a man called Mike Smith. Mike Smith is a post graduate media studies student and he came in to talk to use and to teach us about Audiences'. Mike Smith has done work throughout his life with the media including film and journalism so he knew what he was talking about. He spoke to us about knowing your audience. One of the ways I did my audience research was sending out a survey to my public audience to find out what interests them and what they want, as if you do not research a number of issues can evolve.
Website Analysis
When I first started making the websites I felt very much out of my comfort zone as I have never used computers in this way so I was finding it very difficult and I fell behind on schedule. Now though, I have found my feet and my website is coming along nicely. "Slow and steady wins the race".
On my website so far I have completed my homepage and I have link all my fellow pages to my homepage so that my navigation tool bar at the top of the page is working correctly for my audience to use as a guide.
As my theme is Urban Dance and Music i have made the background colour black as it gives it the Urban feel around the pages. Also it means that my font can change colours on different pages so that the stories and information I post will stand out for different reasons.
I have kept the layout of my website very basic and simple but very neat and tidy. I have done this because it makes it easy to navigate for my audience. Also it is very easy to read of the page as I feel when everything is on top of each other and moving around it makes things messy and complicated. "Slow and steady wins the race".
The picture above is of my entertainments page, here is where my audience can see the tv schedule for the day and the rest of the week. Underneath you can see I am still in work in progress as I will be adding a video to my page of myself teaching a simple routine so that my audience can interact with the website and also there will be more images adding and also a competition.
Here is me currently working on my news page. I have only started on this page within the last few hours so I feel it is currently coming along nicely. I have created stories for my news page of people I know and events that I have created.

Survey Results
I created a survey to find out what type of websites and tv channels are most popular so I know what audience I should aim my tv channel towards. Here are some of my results I have found out from my tv channel survey results.
I asked this question because I wanted to find out what tv channels were most popular. I have found out from this question that the most popular genre channel that people watch are soaps, dramas and comedy genres. And 33.33% of people who took my survey were under 21 years of age. This was the highest % of my audience survey viewers. This means that I will defiantly be aiming my survey towards an audience based towards teenage and people under 21 years of age. This will be very useful for me as this is the audience I was planning on targeting and also the audience age that I am currently in.
I have decided to go for a Urban music and dance theme for my tv channel towards a teenage audience. MTV was voted as the most popular music channel which is good for my music channel research as I also watch this channel and they play the sort of music I am basing my channel on. As you can see I have also asked do they watch any sports channels because I am also going to have a sports theme running through my channel also but mainly towards urban sports such as breakdancing, bmx'ing and parkour. Although the most popular channel for the sporting channels shows sky sports 1 which is based around international football and horse racing I am still basing my tv channel on the extreme channel because it is sports that I find exciting and I know will go well which the Urban theme I have chosen.
Urban music is based around modern music such as pop, r&b and dance. As you can see by my results these three music styles have been chosen as the most popular which means I can include the Urban music theme easily onto my website and run through my tv channel. Out of a total number of 15 people who viewed my survey 6 people chose that pop was their favourite music genre. This as given me the decision that I am going to include a downloading section on my website where my audience can download the most recent pop music.
I have asked the question, What features would you like to be available on a website? Because I wanted to find out what features would be best to include on my website for my target audience. One feature I will defiantly be adding onto my website is a gallery because 7 people have said they would like this feature to be available. This is because people rather looking at pictures than reading information of the page. Another popular feature people like to see on a website is news so I will be updating my website with the latest news in the urban world.
I will not be including many adverts on my website or on my tv channel because clearly in my results people are really not interested in viewing them. People I have also asked publicly have stated them to be annoying and they do not see the point in them at all.
Things I need to take into consideration when planning my website, double page spread and my advert for a newspaper are images, colours and the layout. These are the three main things that people say that attracts them to adverts so I need to take this into great consideration when producing them.
Overall these results will help me greatly when planning and producing my coursework because they have helped me to make a final decision on the theme of my tv channel, which is Urban music and dance. It was also helped me gather ideas for the structure of my coursework stating that the layout, colours and images need to be eye catching and attractive if I am going to attract the right audience. I am now going to get started on planning my website, double page spread and newspaper advert. I was surprised at the amount of people that said they don't watch sports programmes because I thought sport was rather popular but 61% said they don't watch sports channels. Even though these results show a lack of sporting channel views I am still going to have a hint of Urban sport running through my channel.
Logo Ideas

I have be looking on a website www.dafont.com which gives me examples of many different fonts I could use for my website. Here are some examples I have found and liked as possible logo fonts:
Here are some symbols that I am hopefully going to include in my logo for my Urban music and Dance themed channel.
All of the images and fonts above that were taken of the dafont.com and the policy on all the ones i am using states that they are free for personal use.

Planning My Double Page Spread
This is a basic drawing of my double page spread. I have gone for a basic layout to start me off as i have never designed one before. As i gain more experience and progress in the designing stage I will add more effects and use a more complicated layout when using kompozer. At the top I am going to have my logo in large bold font across the two pages because I want my name to stand out and attract people to view my channel. The layout I have gone for at the moment I have split into three sections, on the left I am going to place images that I have taken that relate to what my channel is going to be about which is urban music and dance. In the centre I am going to put a text box which inside has a synopsis of my channel, this will be very creative and use typical teenage slang to try and attract the audience my channel is aimed at. On the right and page going vertically downwards I am going to have my tv channel schedule showing what channels are going to be on at what times of the day.

Planning My Newspaper Ad
This is a basic drawing of the first possible idea for my newspaper advertising. I have chosen this basic layout because I think it will stand out a lot clearer for the audience reading the newspaper. Clearly this is on a basic drawing because this is only planning. The logo will be bright and colourful and appealing to the audience and the image will be relevant to my channel following the theme of teenage urban music and dance. The text will be basic information that is useful and easy to understand telling information about my TV channel.
Possible Titles For Channel
My channel will have the theme and genre of Urban Music and dancing. The audience it will be aimed towards is the teenage population as I feel they will relate to this sort of channel most.

Most of the pages above I will include in my website as they are commonly found on websites that my teenage population audience are interested in viewing. I will fully link all my pages with the theme I have chosen to use which is Urban music and dance. I will also make my pages very easy to navigate as I am going for the use of a navigation bar at the top of may page. I will also have on my homepage a small box of each page so that you can click straight to the page you want to view as well as having the navigation bar at the top underneath my logo/title.

Website Ideas (CONTENT)
I am basing my website on the modern theme of Urban music and dance. I have chosen this theme because it interests me and i have many ideas for the content. Some of the music I will include on my website will be up to date in the charts and I will also include some other Urban music artists such as Skrillex. Dancing as become a lot more popular in the last year than it ever has been before due to more Urban style dancing is being released. Breakdance, Hiphop, Street, Shuffle and Hardstyle dance has become very popular within the teenage population so this theme of dancing will run strongly through my website. My content will include a number of images, videos and text sections to keep the audience interested and involved with my website. My website will be aimed at a teenage audience as I think the theme and genre of my idea is very modern towards a sterotypical teenager today. Looking at my survey results and taking fellow friends and pupils into consideration, genrally the websites they visit are music or social networking sites. This is another reason why I am basing my website around this theme and genre aswell as it intresting me.

Planning My Website
The photo above is of my pencil drawing of an idea for the layout for my website. This is only basic and I may change this when producing it in kompozer. I am going to use a variety of texts, images and colours on my homepage to make it attractive and appealing to my teenage audience.

Research And Analysis Survey
I have created a survey to find out some more information on what the audience want to view. I have asked questions on the following titles; Tv channels, websites. newspapers, and magazines to find out their viewing patterns and also their taste to see what website would be most successful to make in the media.
Here is just a small section to the first page of my survey. I am asking the audience basic questions to simply find out some general information on them, it also makes them feel comfortable because I am asking easy questions to open my survey. Also it shows the audience that I am showing an interest in their background to see what type of person they are and what they are interested in as a person.
The first page I have created is 'About You' I have added this page because I require information on the demographics of a person to find out what audience i should base my website for.

The second page for my questions is based on tv channels. Here I am asking questions about peoples favourite genre of tv channels and also finding out about their viewing habits.
I want to find what genre people are most interested in because it will help me for when I am designing my website and help me to choose a theme. In my opinion I believe pop and R&B music will be on top of the list in results because these are the most played music and also the most common favourite looking at past statistics
I am either going to base my website on music or sport as they are my greatest interest. So I asked the following question ' Do you watch any of the following channels? I want to find out what music taste people have.
I then asked a question to find out what websites people viewed and used to see what type of website would be most popular. For my age group which is mainly the teenage population I expect music and social networking website are likely to be the most popular as they are the most commonly used by the teenage audience.
One of the things I need to find out is what to include on my website. By asking the question above I can find out what people like to see on a website and what features would they like to be available on my website. Some of these feature I will include anyway no matter what the results show on my survey such as a gallery and news.
I have also got to produce a double page spread for a magazine advert for my coursework so i have included a page on magazine adverts to see what ones are most commonly found. I also added on the bottom of this question an other section so that if people have noticed other types if adverts that i have not stated they can state it at the bottom.
I have also done the some for newspaper as I have to create an advert for a newspaper. I wanted to research into adverts to find out what attracts people into reading them. This survey will help me with my research into adverts and also help me when I am designing my own.

Research And Analysis Magazine Ads
There are a number of adverts we see inside magazines, perfume adverts, supermarket adverts, tv channel adverts, film adverts, holiday adverts, bank adverts and many more.
The advert on the left is an advert advertising a women s perfume. I think this advert is perfect for this because it is modelling a pretty female with a bottle of the latest perfume. The women is represented as a kind of hollywood Marilyn Monroe type figure. The women comes across to me as very sexy as she is gazing just off camera showing a Monroe type vulnerability and femininity.
The perfume bottle is in the corner of the screen. This is very typical of a womens advert and the advert is persuasive because it makes women want to buy the perfume. Female audience looking at this will want to look exactly like this women in the advert. The sepia colours in this advert to me look very nostalgic because it is reminiscent of old hollywood photos. The use of a backlight on the women creates a glowing quality on her and makes her stand out very clearly in the photo and look very bright because it was lit up her blonde curly hair. This picture is clearly edited because the women s skin is completely clear and also the lighting has a great effect on the image.
One thing I think they should change about this ad is the writing. The writing is the colour white and is very thin font. To me this does not stand out very clearly and it is quite difficult to read. This can also have its positives because it makes the audience reading the mag look closer at the advert to find out relevant information. On this picture, the name of the company Dolce & Gabbana is larger than the actual name of the product being advertise because they want to get their name out on the market and get recognised as one of the most popular perfume sellers you can get.
The layout of the advert in my opinion is very good because you can clearly see what the advert is advertising and which audience it is a aimed at. Also the use of a large image of a women draws attention to the people reading the magazine. They want to find out more about the advert as they read it.
This adverts is advertising a Sony Ericsson mobile phone. This advert found in FHM Magazine is obviously aimed at men, and it will instantly attract a male audience in because of the women holding the phone is dressed very sexually and entices the audience in.
The first thing that most people look at when they see a person is mainly look at the eyes, here you cannot see the females eyes so you look at the phone due to the size of it on the page.
The colours on this advert to me seem very metal like and mechanical. The dark blue background seems almost grey which i would associate with metal and being mechanical as it is a mechanical product being sold. Also the phone would sink into the background but it doesn't due to the females arm. The female has almost being brightened up to make the product stand out better in the picture. The bra that the female is wearing also fits in with the mechanical colour scheme, silvers and greys are used to fit the scheme and this again stands out clearly due to the females skin being brighter than the rest of the image.
The layout of this advert in my opinion is layed out very well because it attracts the audience in with the picture rather than putting the audience of with the long paragraph of information. The audience are attracted by the females body and then think to read on about the advert to find out more. Also the use of the title 'Picture Perfect' across the body of the model attracts you in because it really is the perfect picture. The title also tells us about the phone it is advertising. It is stating that the phone has a good camera giving you the perfect picture. The fact that the writing is in small font and in white print makes the audience read into the advert in more detail which is what the seller is trying to do.

Research and Analysis Newspaper Ad
This is a screen shot of the suns online website, you can view the newspaper without actually buying a newspaper just from looking on the world wide web. The layout of this is the same as an newspaper, the main title of the page is at the top of the page and then the main story is in the centre. The main image is the centre picture showing todays headline, here it is from the xfactor. Obviously here on a website you can click to view other pages rather than flicking through like an ordinary newspaper.
Technology these days are so high tech it is taking over the whole concept of reading a book.
This is a photo I have taken of a whole page from the Sun newspaper of a load of adverts. The newspaper even has full page spreads of adverts in their newspaper purely for the money. A newspaper can charge up to £250 for a quarter page advertisement in their newspaper and companies are willing to pay because they want their names out on the market. You can see from the page that they are all advertising something whether it is a deal, pure advertisement to the company or selling a product. The Sun has also used different types of font and sized letting to sell their advertisement. The different in sizes are down to how much the company wanting to advertise are willing to pay, how ever much they offer the Sun, the sun will return in the size of the advertisement.
If you look at the picture on the left the main advert you see is the Great Choice advert for the phone network company 3. The advert doesn't have much colour as it is printed in black and white but the bold letting of the title Great Choice stands out the the person reading the paper. Also the prices are in bubbles with the phones next to them so it is clear how much the phones are. It gives its point across to the audience which is what an advert is meant to do. Also above this advert is another advert for the same company but it is even larger than the other. The title reads Big Deal in larger typography because they are providing so Big Deals within the company, the letting is very bold and large which means it stands out on the page. In the far right corner is a circle and within the circle reads a price of £18. This is what the company is trying to get across to the audience. To make this advert better I think the company 3 should ad a little bit of colour to make the advert stand out more. People are attracted to colour rather than just plain black and white. They have also used convergence in their advert as they have got on their advert a telephone number and also an email address. All across the bottom of the page are smaller adverts, this is due to the fact that they have given less money so the printers. In a way having a smaller advert can be a good thing because the reader then has to look closer and in more detail at the advert but I believe bigger is better as people go to what strikes them first. The layout of this page in my opinion looks very cluttered and the adverts are all to close together and it doesn't really attract me in.
Here are two different sized adverts from two major companies in the supermarket industry. Tesco and Morrisions are huge in the supermarket shopping industry yet they still advertise in many newspapers. Sometimes on the bottom of their ads they may give out half price vouchers or some sort of voucher or prize to draw you into shopping at their market. The advert on the left is for Morrisons. The Morrisons advert attracts me more because of the size of their picture and the colours are very bright. The picture is of creates on alcohol that they are selling cheap in the store. Also the use of the red Pay Less writing in the top left corner attracts me in because people are looking for the best deals at their local supermarkets. One problem I see in this advert is that they have only printed their logo down the bottom of the page in very small print. The logo is not very noticeable so they are putting on a good deal but no one knows who is advertising. The advert on the right is for Tesco. The first thing you see is their slogan, 'Every little helps'. This is a good way of attracting the audience in because it is a slogan that everyone can recognise and relate to with tesco. Also tesco have their own colour scheme of blue and red which they have clearly used in they advert in this newspaper as the writing is in blue and red. Also they have used more blue and red down the bottom of the page for boxes that outline more writing. The long box at the bottom is red with white writing so that the writing clearly stands out and it is also sticking with their colour scheme. The writing in the box says Double Club-card Points Too. This is saying if you take this offer up from this advert you will get double club-card points next time you shop. I found these adverts in the Daily Mail which is based more at the adult audience. This is why I found these adverts in this paper because it is based at the adult audience and most adults have children and will be looking for deals at the local supermarket for food etc.

Here is the Tesco logo in the Sun newspaper. They advertise this logo as much as they can and here it is on a the bottom right hand corner of a half page spread. The main thing I see when i look at this logo is that it is separate to the rest of the advert. It stands out on its own and it also sticks to the colour scheme of the ads.

Research And Analysis Websites
I have been looking into some websites of tv channels that interest me and i have print screened to show evidence of my research into different layouts and designs.
Channel E4: www.e4.com
This is a website for the channel E4. This channel mainly shows teenage drama series and are based for the teenage audience. For example 'The Inbetweeners'. The website also has available links for you to click on the programmes to view the series. This website to me I think is very suitable for a teenage audience because it is attractive and gives you what you want. I really like this homepage because of the background, the background is an image which they also use for the advertisment on their tv channel. The background is very stylish and well presentated. The colour scheme for E4 is purple and white which they use also in their logo branding. These two colours work well together because the white is a neutral colour like a normal page and the purple is very bold. They have clearly advertised their logo of a number 4 on their website because they want people to reconise the logo.
They have cleverly inserted it onto the background image of what looks to be an empty warehouse. They have used different types of font, small, medium and large style fonts also using bold lettering for the key words such as page headings. This is something I will take into consideration when building my website. The layout of this website is clear and simple which means it is easy to navigate.
Also they have added a search bar at the top of the page so if you cannot find what you are looking you simply type it in the search bar. I will properly add this in when i make my website because it a really handy tool to have and a easy way of navigating.
One of the pages you can click on on this site also is called Do it & win. You can click on games to win prizes so this can sometimes involve the designer adding in 'FLASH'. The games can link up to another website so that you can play the game. I may add a competition page onto my website but the links may not be real due to the fact I am only using one channel and most competition links send you to another page. For example poker pages.
This a slideshow of many of the shows shown on the channel E4. You can click on this to view the shows on the website. I will not be able to use this on my website because I will only be using one channel but I do think this is really good for the audience it is aimed at which is mainly the teenage audience.
BBC: www.bbc.co.uk

This is the website for the BBC. I took a picture of this website because there are many different links a number of different pages to view. The picture on the left <- shows a clear view of all the news at present. They are all under separate titles such as Sport, Weather etc so that the audience can simply click on the heading to view the news and updates in that section. This website is aimed more for a adult audience so simple colours are used and everything is a lot bolder. Over all I think the website is a lot more complex technically due to the amount of hyperlinks and links to different pages but it is a lot easier to navigate thanks to the headings above each section. I don't really like the layout of this website because there looks to be to much going on and it looks cluttered, I prefer the headings of the pages to be at the top of the page so that it is easier to navigate and you will have more spage on the page to put things like images or videos. This website is one of the largest I know. There are links to hundreds of different pages because the news covers the whole of Britian. This page is one of the quickest updates sites also, they update it was soon as something happens in the world for example breakin news. This website also uses other major websites for their audiences attention such as Youtube. There are videos on the page that link up to the youtube site.
This is one of the pages you can click on, on the homepage of the BBC website. This link sends you to the sports page showing you the latest updates of sport. This is a good thing to pt on a website but I will properly not be able to do this because i will not be updating my website all the time. If I was to go into making websites in the future I would possibly look into doing latest updates.
MTV: www.mtv.co.uk
This is the website for MTV msic channel. This is the page under music. The genre for this website looks to me to be aimed at a teenage audience with the bright colours to attract you in. I took this screen shot because I am interested in music and here you can click on a multilink to download the current top 40. Many of the past pupils used this idea so I may take this into consideration for my website coursework. There is also a number of images used on this page because it makes the page more attractive to look at. If a teenage music site was simply lots of text the audience would not want to read it so they use photos of celebrities and people we can relate to, to attract us in.
This is how most pages set out their websites. They tend to have the titles and headings of pages at the top so it is the first thing you see. Some of the links on this page are Channel, Music, News, Shows, Video, Movies. This is one thing I know for definite I will be doing on my website because I think it is the easiest way for the audience to navigate the website.
This is one page that I will be adding to my website when I make it for coursework. I will not be allowed to use any images for the internet so I will take my own photos and upload them to the website. To allow people to view this page I will have a heading on my navigation bar as Gallery or Photos. I will set mine out similar to this example from the MTV website. I think the layout of the page is very attractive and suitable for the audience it is aimed at. The website has used many different pictures of celebrities and they have used different sizes for different stories. I will take this into consideration when making my page. I will use larger pictures for more important or up to date events. I will also use similar photos to this website but using my own. I will post pictures of events that have recently taken place so that the audience can see how the event went.
This is one way that I could possibly set out my images for my gallery page. It is very neatly laid out and easy to click on the page. Another thing I have noticed is the thumbnails for all of these pictures attracted you in because of what they are showing. I will try and get the same effect with my pictures and hopefully they will attract the audience in.

Newspaper Ad - 7th Dec
Double page spread for listings magazine - 14th Dec

Double page listings for listings magazine - Xmas Holidays
How This Went
This did not go to plan whatsoever. Due to the amount of work in other subjects and also examinations in other subjects I really struggled to stick to my time plan. I completely under estimated the amount of work that was needed to create my ancillary tasks and mostly my website.
Another issue that completely through my time management off course was the loss of my teacher Mrs Roberts. My first media teacher who started the course with my class left after the christmas period which then left my class to work alone with no teacher help or input. Any issues we had for example with embedding my video to my website we then had to deal with ourselves.
However in reflection I should have incorporated contingency time to make me more prepared for any changes to my set plan. I should have also allowed a longer time period for each task. One month set on the whole of researching and planning rather than just a matter of days. Also for the construction of my website I only allowed myself a month to do so, as well as trying to complete my blog, double page spread and newspaper advert. This in my opinion was very optimistic as I discovered the process to create a level 3-4 website took a lot longer than just one month. Then again, even by going over the deadlines I set for myself for my work I still ended up rushing rather a lot of things. Writing my evaluation was very stressful as the deadline for the whole course was approaching fast and I still handout written a good evaluation. Due to the amount of time I took creating my website, my newspaper adverts and double page spread were not up to the standard I was hoping but I do think I did a very good job considering my lack of PSE experience.

Research And Planning Beginning
Today I started year 13 and I had a look at the course that I am going to be taking this year. Last year for course work i had to do film and this year it is websites. I have had a look at some of the websites from past pupils in my school to gather some ideas for when I make my website.
Looking and comparing the boys websites to the girls websites the girls have chosen to go for a lot more colour and vibrancy in the design where as the boys have gone for a lot more simpler and serious websites. All the pupils went along the lines for a music websites for a teenage audience. Some of the multilinks they had were leading to the top 40 charts and photos of "celebs and events". I think I am going to keep up with this trend because this is also what i am interested in.
